The expression “history repeats itself” is something that Saddam Hussein took literally. He visualized himself as the great warrior Nebuchadnezzar, who regained power in the ancient Babylonian empire. This empire fell under the leadership of Belshazzar, the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar. Belshazzar was a playboy and not a warrior and was overthrown by the Meeds and the Persians, or contemporary Iran.
Saddam Hussein is ruthless but not a good warrior. With one of the largest armies in the world, he was unsuccessful in trying to overthrow Iran. And, in his own mind, he thought Kuwait was his because it was part of the ancient Babylonian empire.
Historically speaking, there have only been four world empires: Babylon, Meedo Persian, Greek and Roman. There have been many warriors who have tried to enlarge this list. Saddam Hussein must have delusions of grandeur if he considers himself a viable candidate for world power, yet our troops are still bleeding in this ancient land and let us hope and pray that soon these problems will be resolved.
