PHOENIX – Hideo Nomo outpitched Curt Schilling and rookie Larry Barnes hit an RBI double as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 1-0 Sunday.

A day after losing 1-0 to Arizona, the Dodgers scored one run or fewer for the 26th time this season, but the run was enough for Nomo (12-8).

Barnes, who had just 16 games of major league experience before this season, got his third career RBI, his first since June 22, 2001, for Anaheim at Seattle.

Nomo shut out the Diamondbacks on opening day and lost to them 2-1 on July 6. He allowed four singles – three by Craig Counsell – and walked five in 7 2-3 innings. He is 3-0 since his loss to Arizona at Dodger Stadium.

Eric Gagne completed the four-hitter for his 35th save, his 43rd in a row dating to last year.

Schilling (5-6) lost for the third time in four starts since spending six weeks on the disabled list because of a broken right hand.

He allowed eight hits in eight innings and struck out seven. His fourth strikeout – against Alex Cora to end the fourth – moved him past Sam McDowell for 29th on the career list, and he increased his total to 2,457.

Cubs 5, Astros 3

HOUSTON – Sammy Sosa hit his 521st career home run, tying Ted Williams and Willie McCovey for 12th place on the career list, as the Chicago Cubs beat the Houston Astros 5-3 Sunday.

Sosa, who had been 0-for-7 in the series, homered to left in the first inning, his 22nd of the season and 12th in July. He trails Jimmie Foxx by 13 homers for 11th place on the career list.

Eric Karros and Mark Grudzielanek also had solo homers, and Kenny Lofton went 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple.

Shawn Estes (7-8) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings, striking out six.

Rockies 6, Brewers 1

DENVER (AP) – Jason Jennings pitched six strong innings and hit a two-run single as the Colorado Rockies beat Milwaukee 6-1 Sunday to complete its third straight home sweep of the Brewers.

Jennings (10-8) allowed one run, five hits and four walks, giving Colorado its ninth consecutive victory over Milwaukee at Coors Field.

Milwaukee’s Wayne Franklin (7-7) allowed four runs, four hits and six walks in six innings, and struck out five.

Marlins 7, Phillies 6

MIAMI – Juan Pierre hit a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning Sunday, and the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies for the eighth time in a row, 7-6.

Miguel Cabrera doubled with one out in the ninth off Mike Williams (1-5). After Alex Gonzalez struck out, pinch hitter Todd Hollandsworth walked. Pierre then dropped a flare into short left field, and Cabrera slid home ahead of Pat Burrell’s throw.

Williams lost for the second time in the series and has an ERA of 9.64 since being acquired from Pittsburgh on July 20.

Ugueth Urbina (2-0) struck out four in two scoreless innings. The Florida bullpen shut out Philadelphia over the final five innings.

Cardinals 4, Pirates 3

ST. LOUIS – Albert Pujols’ two-out RBI single capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning and gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

With the Cardinals trailing by two in the ninth, Edgar Renteria singled off reliever Mike Lincoln with one out. Kerry Robinson singled for his third hit of the game, and a double steal put runners at second and third.

Pinch-hitter Eduardo Perez popped out for the second out, but Orlando Palmeiro’s two-run single tied it at 3.

After Bo Hart walked and pinch-hitter Mike Matheny hit an infield single to load the bases, Pujols singled to center to win it.

The Cardinals were 1-40 when trailing after eight innings before the rally.

Expos 13, Braves 10

MONTREAL – Orlando Cabrera homered and went 3-for-5 with a career-high six RBIs as the Montreal Expos came back from four runs down to beat the Atlanta Braves 13-10 Sunday.

Endy Chavez, Ron Calloway and Wil Cordero also homered for Montreal, which trailed 5-1 in the third inning and 8-4 in the sixth against Greg Maddux. The Expos got a pair of runs in the sixth, then scored five times in the seventh to go ahead for good.

Marcus Giles of the Braves doubled in his first four at-bats, tying major league records for doubles in a game and consecutive doubles in a game.

Atlanta had 17 hits, including a pair of two-run homers by Robert Fick.

Reds 8, Mets 5

NEW YORK – Paul Wilson defeated his former team for the first time, and Jose Guillen hit a tiebreaking homer in the fifth inning to lead the Cincinnati Reds over the New York Mets 8-5 Sunday.

Wilson (6-8) made his second start and third career appearance against the team that selected him with the first pick of the 1994 amateur draft. Traded by the Mets to Tampa Bay in July 2000, he signed with Cincinnati in January. Wilson allowed five runs and eight hits in seven innings.

Felix Heredia pitched the eighth, and Scott Williamson finished for his 21st save in 26 chances.

Giants 6, Padres 2

SAN FRANCISCO – Andres Galarraga drove in four runs to back Jesse Foppert as the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 Sunday for their 10th win in 11 games.

Pedro Feliz also homered for the Giants, who finished 10-1 on their winningest homestand in 14 years.

Foppert (7-8) won for the third time in four starts, allowing two runs – one earned – and six hits in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Jake Peavy (8-8) gave up six runs and eight hits in six innings, and struck out seven.

He has lost three consecutive decisions after winning a career-best four in a row.

Ryan Klesko and Mark Loretta drove in runs for the Padres, who lost for the third time in four games. Loretta had three hits.

Galarraga hit behind Barry Bonds, who walked twice, including once intentionally. Galarraga has 120 RBIs against the Padres, his third-highest total, trailing Philadelphia (122) and Pittsburgh (121).

Bonds went 2-for-4 with four walks in his two games against the Padres. He has 73 career homers and 188 RBIs against San Diego, his most against any team.

Klesko’s sacrifice fly gave San Diego a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Giants went ahead in the bottom half on Marquis Grissom’s RBI single and Galarraga’s two-run double, which followed a walk to Bonds.

San Diego closed to 3-2 in the third on Loretta’s RBI single. After Bonds was intentionally walked to loaded the bases in the bottom half, Galarraga followed with a two-run single.

Feliz homered in the sixth.

Notes: Bonds got his fifth assist of the year, the 150th of his career, when he doubled up Sean Burroughs at first base from left field in the second. … The Giants won 10 of 12 games during a homestand from June 9-21, 1989. … Loretta leads the Padres with 117 hits, 22 more than Burroughs. … Foppert is second among NL rookies with 88 strikeouts, nine behind leader Brandon Webb. … The Giants sold out their 22nd consecutive game, drawing 42,530.
