Old Glory

On the Fourth of July, I noticed my Betsy Ross flag had been stolen from the front of my home. I don’t know who would do such a thing, but I was very upset.

I called the Lewiston Police Department to report the theft. Officer Kevin Cramp was dispatched to my home. I explained to him my son was in the military serving with the 4th Infantry Division in Iraq and the flag had a very special meaning to me and my family. He said he would do what he could to find it, but the chances were not good that I would ever get it back.

The next morning Officer Cramp called me and asked if he could come to see me. He explained that he was very upset that someone would take the flag, as he is a former Marine and knew what it meant to me. He and the Lewiston Police Department called around town looking to replace my flag and were given a flag by the Veterans Administration. He said the flag was old and tattered, but it was the best he could do.

I cannot tell you how very grateful my husband and I are to Officer Cramp and the department. We put the flag up right away and will give it to my son when he returns from Iraq. This flag is a special flag and will become a family memento and will be cherished forever.

Great fireworks

I had to take the time to write to congratulate all those who were involved in putting on the fireworks display this year.

In my opinion (I’ve lived here for over 50 years), it was the best fireworks display that’s ever been seen in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

I was fortunate enough to be able to watch them from the Auburn Esplanade and my hat is off to the pyrotechnics. Great job. These fireworks were coming from three different directions at once. Just when we thought the finale had come, here came more – and then more.

Although you remain anonymous to most of us, your work has not gone unnoticed. Stand up and take a bow. I can’t wait to see what happens next year.

Once again, to all of you who worked so hard for the 2003 fireworks display in Lewiston-Auburn, congratulations and many thanks. It was appreciated.

Leaders praised

This is a huge thank you to acknowledge the Girl Scout leaders of troops 191 and 1988 in Temple. Their time, patience, skill and knowledge makes Scouting an enjoyable adventure for my three granddaughters who have been active in the Temple troop for four years.

I admire the strength that it takes to go way beyond what is required of them. They have dedicated themselves to leading the Scouts for many years and I certainly hope they continue to do so for many more years. They are two very outstanding ladies.

Thanks to mutt strutters

A success for the Great Androscoggin Humane Society’s Strutt Your Mutt walk that was held on June 7. My name is Travis Durgin, and I want to thank everybody that donated for the walk.

You know who you are and you all should be very proud. When the money was turned in, I had a total of $382. I was really happy to reach such a big dollar amount. Hopefully next year we can raise even more.

The Strutt Your Mutt walk brought in over $7,000, which all stays right at the Humane Society. The Humane Society holds this walk every year to raise money to help with shots, food and care of all the animals.

Thanks again for all of your support and all the animals at the shelter thank you too.
