BETHEL – A float on the theme “These Are Our Good Olde Days” and a non-scientific straw poll on Democratic presidential contenders were the highlights of the Oxford County Democrats presence at Mollyockett Day on July 19.

Sen. Bruce Bryant was aboard the float along with a bevy of future political leaders, including his daughters, Logan, Larissa and Lanette; Kendra Carter, granddaughter of Tim and Jodi Carter of the float committee; Molly Siegel, Abby, Rachel and Rose Goldberg and Ben Shimamura. Tim Carter was the driver and the trailer was loaned by the Carter Farm in Bethel.

According to County Chairwoman Cathy Newell, the float was in the tradition of old-time Democratic floats in the Mollyockett Day parade, including “Miz Lillian and the Peanuts” and former Bethel and Oxford County Chairman Paul McGuire’s papier mache donkey, which made several appearances.

The Oxford County Democratic booth on the common featured a free raffle and non-scientific straw poll, which encouraged citizens of all ages to indicate their preference among the nine declared candidates for the Democratic nomination in 2004, as well as other undeclared prospects.

New Englanders John Kerry and Howard Dean gathered the most votes from the 97 participants, with Kerry at 30 and Dean at 29. Carol Mosley Braun was a surprise third -place finisher with 12.

Raffle winners were Jan Stowell of Bethel, plante; Frank Gehrling of Oakland, gift certificate; Richard Doherty of Rumford, video; and Jodi Carter, patriotic napkin collection.
