BOSTON (AP) – Boston Red Sox left-hander Casey Fossum, the longtime subject of trade talks, was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket Monday for more work.
Utilityman Lou Collier was called up to take Fossum’s place on the Red Sox roster.
Fossum made the Red Sox rotation out of spring training, but he spent more than a month on the disabled list with tendinitis and has pitched out of the bullpen since being activated July 17. He pitched one perfect inning in relief and was the winner in Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees.
, improving his record to 5-4 and his ERA to 5.56.
He will start the first game of Pawtucket’s doubleheader against Ottawa on Tuesday.
Collier is batting .293 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs for Pawtucket this season, playing mostly in the outfield but also at shortstop and first base. He had three hits in the International League All-Star game.
