BRIDGTON – The Bridgton Public Library will celebrate the 90th birthday of its building at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 30. Guests will take a walk through history and have birthday cake.

There will be music, costumes and amusing tidbits from the Bridgton News. Attendees will be whisked back 90 years to Wednesday, July 30, 1913.

The Dalton Holmes Davis Memorial Building was erected on the corner of Main and Church streets. The lot was cleared of its existing building, which was moved up Main Hill and placed on a foundation opposite the Farragut Memorial on North High Street.

The large brick building was funded by Dr. Nathan J. Davis in memory of his son, Dalton, who died at the age of 24. Dr. Davis also donated books to the library and money to operate it.

The Dalton Holmes Davis Memorial building, dedicated on July 30, 1913, has since been the home of the Bridgton Public Library, originally founded in the previous century.

The time machine will lift off from the library’s front lawn – 64 Main St. in scenic downtown – rain or shine. Refreshments will feature an enormous cake in the shape of the library.

The event is being sponsored by the Friends of the Library. For more information, call the library at 647-2472.
