1919 – 2003
LEWISTON – Elijah L. Fournier Jr., 83, widower of Martha M. Bernard Fournier of 15 Roxbury Road, Mexico died Monday, July 28, at the Central Maine Medical Center shortly after being admitted.
He was born in Rumford, Nov. 23, 1919, the son of Elijah L. and Louise M. LeBarge Fournier Sr. He was a communicant of St. Theresa’s Church and a graduate of Stephens High School in the Class of 1939.
During World War II her served as a Tec-4 with the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations and was awarded the Bronze Star.
Mr. Fournier was a retired superintendent on the rewinders of No. 15 paper machine at the Boise-Cascade Paper Group of Rumford with more than 40 years of service and belonged to the 25 and 40 Year Clubs of Retired Boise-Cascade Employees.
He was a member of the Maine Harness Horseman’s Association, Robert Shand Post 1641 VFW, Napoleon Ouellette Post 24 American Legion and LeParasseux Snowshoe Club. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and was an avid horseracing fan.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara and her husband John Bartash of Rumford and Bernadette and her husband William Arnold of Mexico; three sons, Elijah E. of Bangor, Bernard of Carmel and Gregory and his wife Lois of Herman; nine grandchildren, John and Andrew Bartash, Elijah and Amelia Arnold, Jeff, Marc, Seth and Tyler Fournier and Missy Ellis; a brother, Fern of Orlando, Fla.; a friend and companion, Jean Kenny of Mexico; and his dog “Albert.”
He was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur and Norman.
