WESTBROOK – Recent figures from the Credit Union National Association show that for the third straight year Maine continues to be one of the strongest credit union states in the nation. According to the Maine Credit Union League, the figures show that more than 605,000 Mainers, or about 47 percent of the population, belonged to Credit Unions last year, the fifth-highest percentage among all states, trailing only Virginia, Alaska, Hawaii and Utah. The national average was 28.5 percent.
A spokesman for CUNA said that, throughout the nation, Maine is recognized as not only one of the strongest Credit Union states but also as one where members are particularly active and involved, especially in the area of community service.
The Maine Credit Union League is the state trade association for Maine’s 77-affiliated Credit Unions providing a variety of services and products to assist Credit Unions in meeting the needs of their membership.
