MEXICO – River Valley Expo exhibitors should plan to attend a free pre-show workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Oxford Federal Credit Union training room. Light refreshments will be served.

This is an opportunity for getting ideas on decorating a winning booth, as well as booth etiquette, according to the workshop’s organizers.

People may attend the pre-show workshop and register that day. For information about the Expo before the workshop phone the Chamber of Commerce office at 364-3241.

French groups

to meet Today

RUMFORD – Conversational French for beginner and intermediate groups will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, downstairs at the Rumford Public Library.

Sudbury Canada Days

BETHEL – The 23rd annual Sudbury Canada Days will be Aug. 8-10. This is the summer heritage festival of the Bethel Historical Society.

Festivities will begin Friday, Aug. 8, with the arrival of the Civil War re-enactors, featuring the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Also on Friday evening will be 12th annual Hall Memorial Lecture. Allan R. Whitmore, Ph.D., chairman of the University of Southern Maine History Department, will make a presentation on the life and career of George Washington Madox of Ellsworth, who began life as a Know-Nothing and ended up a feminist and Marxist.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, the horseshoe tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Ice cream will be available from the 1922 Mount Zircon Bottle Lunch Stand. The children’s parade (ages 4-12) will be at 1 p.m., with the theme “Famous Americans.” Traditional craft demonstrations and exhibits, a flower show, historical videos, art show, old-time children’s games and a farming/logging exhibit will continue through the afternoon. There will also be badminton and croquet tournaments. At 5 p.m. a log driver’s bean supper will be followed by a program featuring a visit by “Hannibal Hamlin” and his wife, Ellen.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, there will be an open house at the Lower Sunday River Schoolhouse (1895) and the day’s events will end with an old-time hymn sing at the historic Middle Intervale Meetinghouse (1816).

All events except for the bean supper are free.
