STONEHAM, Mass. (AP) – A sudden downpour touched off a series of chain-reaction crashes that injured 16 people on Interstate 93 Sunday, state police said.

Thirty cars piled up in the northbound lanes around 3:15 p.m., Sgt. David Paine said.

Five people were taken to area hospitals with various injuries, none of them life-threatening, Paine said.

Five minutes later, a second crash involving 10 cars occurred in the southbound lanes of I-93, he said.

“Curiosity appears to be the cause of the 10-car pileup,” Paine said.

Nine people were treated for minor injuries caused by the second crash.

A third crash happened around the same time in the northbound lanes when a motorcyclist collided with a car just south of where the first pileup occurred, he said.

The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and was taken to Winchester Hospital. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Paine said.

I-93 remained open, but traffic backed up as much as two miles in both directions. The area was cleared and the highway completely reopened by 4:45 p.m., Paine said.
