AUGUSTA – Deuces were wild in Monday’s second round game at the Maine State American Legion Tournament. Two rain delays, two fields, two key errors and a 2-1 victory for Andrews Post.

A pair of brief downpours early in the game brought too many puddles to the McGuire Field infield, forcing everyone to move to the better suited for the soaking Morton Field next door in the third inning.

Both teams waited about a half-hour for the Nova Seafood-Bessey Motors game that was also in a rain delay to resume and record the final three outs.

Maybe the rain delays were just what Andrews Post needed to figure out Brewer southpaw Chad Gomm, who was perfect for 5 2/3 innings before yielding a game-tying solo home run to Joe Fessenden over 380 feet to right-center.

Gomm (two hits, eight Ks, one walk) settled down after the home run, but hurt his own cause in the eighth.

Following Mike D’Andrea’s leadoff single, Rocco Toppi reached when Gomm fielded his sacrifice bunt and pulled the first baseman off the bag with his throw.

D’Andrea was then erased at third on a failed bunt attempt, and Gomm looked as if he might escape with the tie when Joe Martin hit a double play ball to short.

The second baseman’s relay to first went wide and into the Andrew’s dugout, allowing Toppi to score.

Toppi earned the win in 6 2/3 innings in relief of starter Matt Smart, who was pulled two pitches after the game resumed at Morton. Toppi inherited a 2-0 count and quickly yielded an RBI single to Jake Knight for Brewer’s only run of the game, but he held Brewer to just three hits the rest of the way.

Brewer meets Monmouth in an elimination game today at 2 p.m., while Andrews will face Nova Seafood at 4 p.m.
