ANDOVER – The Ellis River Riders of Andover and the Maine Quarter Horse Association hosted the association’s Ride 2003 on July 20. Twenty-seven riders participated in the day-long trail ride.
Jim Jennings, executive director of publications for “America’s Horse,” the official magazine of the American Quarter Horse Association, attended. He said this is only the second association ride he has attended this season. He said he chose Maine because his wife, Mavis, “has always wanted to come to Maine.” He said they were impressed with the friendly people and the beauty of the state.
The association’s ride program began in 1997 and annually hosts 70 rides throughout the world. All horse enthusiasts are welcome to participate. A portion of the proceeds benefit the American Quarter Horse Foundation and a local charity selected by the host affiliates.
Ride proceeds benefit many state, national, provincial and international charities. Last year association affiliates raised $43,385 for local charities and more than $11,000 for the American Quarter Horse Foundation, which helps with equine research, educational outreach and youth scholarships. The Ellis River Ride charity for 2003 is the Maine Abused Women’s Advocacy Program.
