AUBURN — Papa John’s Pizza Restaurants in Auburn and Brunswick have honored area high school seniors as 2003 Papa John’s Scholars.

In recognition of their achievements in areas ranging from leadership to community involvement, each student was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice.

A surprise “pizza patrol party team” delivered the scholarship awards and pizzas to Shaun Allen of Brunswick High School and Kendra Joy Keene of Edward Little High School.

Allen, a graduate of Brunswick High School, is a member of the varsity lacrosse team, the American Red Cross, U.S. Soccer Referee Association, the symphonic band, Maine State Honors Band, Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble.

He has won awards for trumpet and was named Most Artistically Talented. He was named Player of the Year and MVP by the Coastal Soccer League. He plans to attend Roger Williams University and to major in architecture.

Kendra Joy Keene, a graduate of Edward Little High School, is a member of the softball team, French Club and the National Honor Society. She has been included in the highest honor roll all four years of high school and has earned the Jim Hachey Award for English. She plans to attend either Husson College or the University of Maine and will major in psychology.

Papa John’s Scholars is a nationwide scholarship program funded by individual restaurant owners. Winners are eligible to apply for a national $5,000 Papa John’s “The Works” Scholarship.
