LIVERMORE FALLS – The Moose Hill Freewill Baptist Church will observe its 175th anniversary Sunday with a special service at 2 p.m.

The Rev. Ed Merrill, head of World Mission Support for the American Baptist Churches of Maine, will be the guest speaker, sharing the pulpit with the interim pastor, the Rev. John Dunn Jr.

Musicians will be Richard and Rebecca Pelletier.

All are invited to attend and those wishing may take a picnic lunch to share during the social hour after worship. The church will furnish punch, tea and coffee.

In her history of the church, prepared for the centennial celebration in 1928, Clerk Elsie H. Record wrote the following:

“On the first page of our first church book, we find this entry, ‘The First Freewill Baptist Church in Livermore was organized at the dwelling house of Eben Farrington in said town on the 11th of February, 1828.'”

The church building was constructed in 1838 on a lot of land donated by Deacon Joseph Lyford.

Built by Mace Smith, contractor, it was dedicated in December of that year and is the oldest church building in town. It underwent major renovations in 1970, bringing the building up to date with a full basement and new furnace as well as a bell tower.

Many have served the church as spiritual leaders. One outstanding name is that of Elder William Badger who preached here for 20 years and baptized 101 converts in the little pond at the foot of the hill.
