NEW YORK – Derek Jeter homered in each of the first two innings and Hideki Matsui and Jason Giambi also hit home runs, leading Roger Clemens and the New York Yankees over the Texas Rangers 6-2 Tuesday night.

Jeter hit a leadoff homer in the first and a two-run shot in the second. It was his first multihomer game of the season and fourth of his career.

Matsui added a two-run homer in the first and Giambi hit his AL-leading 32nd home run in the fifth.

Clemens (11-7) earned his 304th career victory, allowing one run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Athletics 7, Tigers 2

DETROIT – Rookie Rich Harden won again, pitching six strong innings as the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 7-2.

Harden (3-0) gave up two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked two to give the A’s their ninth win in 12 games.

The 21-year-old righty has allowed just four runs over 27 innings with 23 strikeouts in three starts since Oakland purchased his contract from Triple-A Sacramento on July 17.

White Sox 5, Royals 4

CHICAGO – Frank Thomas hit a two-run homer and Esteban Loaiza went six solid innings for the Chicago White Sox in a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals.

The White Sox ended a three-game losing skid and climbed within two games of the AL Central-leading Royals.

The surging White Sox are 14-5 since the All-Star break and have shaved five games off Kansas City’s division lead. Chicago has homered at home in 17 straight games, a franchise record.

Mariners 2, Indians 1

CLEVELAND – Jamie Moyer became the AL’s third 15-game winner with seven innings of soft toss, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Throwing his usual assortment of curves, screwballs, changeups and a not-so-fastball, Moyer (15-5) allowed one run and three hits to join Oakland’s Mark Mulder and Toronto’s Roy Halladay for the league lead in victories.

Orioles 3, Twins 2

BALTIMORE – Jason Johnson and four relievers combined on a six-hitter, and Luis Matos drove in two runs as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Minnesota Twins 3-2.

Brook Fordyce had two hits and scored twice for the Orioles, who have won 13 of 16 at Camden Yards.

Johnson (9-5) allowed two runs and five hits in six-plus innings to improve his lifetime record against the Twins to 5-0.

Devil Rays 5, Blue Jays 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Travis Lee homered and singled in the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning, giving the Tampa Bay Devil Rays a 5-4 comeback victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tom Wilson hit a tiebreaking, two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning to put Toronto ahead 4-2, but the Devil Rays rallied with two outs in the ninth against Cliff Politte.

National League

Marlins 4, Cardinals 0

ST. LOUIS – Brad Penny allowed four hits in seven sharp innings as the Florida Marlins beat Woody Williams and the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 Tuesday night.

Juan Encarnacion was 3-for-4, and Miguel Cabrera and Alex Gonzalez each drove in a run for the Marlins, who have won eight of 10. Florida is 12-5 since the All-Star break to climb into the thick of the NL wild-card race.

Mets 10, Astros 1

HOUSTON – Vance Wilson’s three-run homer keyed a seven-run fifth inning, and Al Leiter had another strong outing as the New York Mets beat the Houston Astros 10-1.

Tony Clark hit his third home run in two games for the Mets, who broke out the bats again after setting season highs for runs and hits (19) in a 13-5 victory over St. Louis on Sunday.

Phillies 7, Rockies 2

DENVER – Bobby Abreu and Ricky Ledee homered, and Brett Myers pitched into the eighth inning to lead the Philadelphia Phillies past the Colorado Rockies 7-2.

Myers (11-6) allowed two runs and eight hits, striking out three and walking two for his first win in three starts. The Phillies maintained their two-game lead over Florida in the NL wild-card race.The Phillies roughed up All-Star Shawn Chacon (11-6) for five runs and six hits over five innings.

Brewers 4, Braves 3

MILWAUKEE – Richie Sexson homered twice and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3.

With Milwaukee down 3-2 in the seventh and a runner on first, Sexson hit a 430-foot shot off Darren Holmes (1-2) that hit the scoreboard in center field.

Sexson reached 30 homers for the third time in his career with a 425-foot solo shot off starter Horacio Ramirez in the fifth that gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead.

This was Sexson’s second multihomer game of the season.

He hit three home runs at Atlanta on April 25 in the only other series between the clubs.

Damian Rolls walked and scored on Marlon Anderson’s single. After Anderson stole second, pinch-hitter Al Martin tied it with a single to right on a 3-2 pitch. It was Politte’s sixth blown save in 18 chances.
