BOSTON (AP) – Boston Bruins defenseman Jonathan Girard, seriously injured in a car crash last month, may be discharged from a Montreal hospital in a week, his agent said Wednesday.

Girard may be transferred to another faciltity to continue his recovery from a broken pelvis, said his agent, Bob Sauve.

Girard, 23, was at the wheel of a car that lost control and flipped near his home town of Rawdon, Quebec on July 24. He was trapped upside down for 45 minutes before rescue workers could free him. Two other passengers were not seriously injured.

Girard has been treated at Hospital du Sacre Coeur in Montreal, where he had surgery a few days after the accident to mend his pelvis and drain fluid from his lungs. He lost blood due to internal bleeding and is also recovering from a blood infection.

Sauve said it would be “two to three months” before Girard would be on his feet, and that there’s no timetable for his return to hockey.

“We’re going to take care of his health, and hockey-wise, we’ll see down the road,” said Sauve, who is based in Montreal.

Team general manager Mike O’Connell said Girard was “very lucky to live.”

and praised the care he received.

“The biggest issue is the stabilization of his pelvis, allowing it time to heal after surgery,” O’Connell told The Boston Globe. “The good news is, based on what the doctors are saying, is that he should have a good shot at resuming his career after this season.”

Girard had six goals and 16 assists in 73 games with the Bruins last season and signed a one-year contract earlier this year. In 150 career NHL games, all with Boston, he has 10 goals and 34 assists.
