RUMFORD – When something turns 200 years old, a party is in order.

And at the Rumford Point Congregational Church, that party is set for Aug. 17, complete with cake and ice cream.

Louise Morton, coordinator of the bicentennial celebration and one of the church deacons, has been a part of the small but stately church on the banks of the Androscoggin River for nearly 61 years.

She believes a church presence is very important to a town, particularly for a hamlet like Rumford Point that has few other facilities.

“It serves as the center,” she said.

The church was also her focal point as she was growing up, and became an important part of raising her children.

“I wanted them to have the benefit of Bible study and learning about being a good person,” she said.

The celebration is important.

“People have worked so hard over the years,” she said.

Former pastors are invited, as is anyone from the community. Along with cake and ice cream, the Memory Garden located next to the church will be rededicated. Here, a big variety of flowers and shrubs transplanted from current and former church member gardens are on display. It is one way to remember these people.

Scrapbooks with newspaper clippings, photographs, church bulletins and other memorabilia will also be available for perusing and remembering.

“The Rumford Point Congregational Church is in the process of renewing itself through its bicentennial,” said interim Pastor Michael Johnson. “We are hosting a birthday party and public supper for the community and we invite everyone to participate.”

The birthday party begins at 3 p.m. On Thursday, Aug. 21, a public ham supper will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

“I’m excited,” said Morton. “It’s a chance to see friends and neighbors.”
