Canada festival

BETHEL – The 23rd annual Sudbury Canada Days will be Aug. 8-10. This is the summer heritage festival of the Bethel Historical Society. Festivities will begin Friday, Aug. 8, with the arrival of the Civil War re-enactors, featuring the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Also on Friday evening will be 12th annual Hall Memorial Lecture. Allan R. Whitmore, Ph.D., chairman of the University of Southern Maine History Department, will make a presentation on the life and career of George Washington Madox of Ellsworth, who began life as a Know-Nothing and ended up a feminist and Marxist.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, the horseshoe tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Ice cream will be available from the 1922 Mount Zircon Bottle Lunch Stand. The children’s parade (ages 4-12) will be at 1 p.m., with the theme “Famous Americans.” Traditional craft demonstrations and exhibits, a flower show, historical videos, art show, old-time children’s games and a farming/logging exhibit will continue through the afternoon. There will also be badminton and croquet tournaments. At 5 p.m. a log driver’s bean supper will be followed by a program featuring a visit by “Hannibal Hamlin” and his wife, Ellen.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, there will be an open house at the Lower Sunday River Schoolhouse (1895) and the day’s events will end with an old-time hymn sing at the historic Middle Intervale Meetinghouse (1816). All events except for the bean supper are free.

Reunion meeting

RUMFORD – A meeting to finalize plans for a Class of 1958 reunion will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the American Legion. Anyone interested in attending the class reunion on Saturday, Aug. 30, at the American Legion, and who has not sent in payment should attend this meeting. No admittance will be allowed with prior payment.

DIXFIELD – The organizing committee for the Pulp & Paper Heritage museum is will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Ludden Memorial Library. Members will discuss the Caboose, a traveling museum, work on the proposed business plan and consider developing a museum Web site.

Anyone interested is welcome to attend and contribute ideas.

Blood drive

RUMFORD – The American Red Cross bloodmobile will visit Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the American Legion Hall, 184 Congress St. Donor hours are 1 to 6 p.m.

“We are strongly encouraging donors to attend,” said Thomas Miller. Giving blood now will help us get through the tough times.”

The Maine Blood Services must collect 300 to 350 pints of blood daily in order to meet patients’ meeds in Maine. Now seven out of eight blood types are currently below the three day safe minimum.

Potential donors must be at least 17 years of age, in generally good health and must weigh at least 110 pounds. There is no longer an upper age limit to donate blood.

Diabetes meeting

RUMFORD – A diabetes support group meeting will be held for anyone with diabetes and anyone affected by diabetes at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Rumford Hospital, room 357. For more information phone 369-1136.

Class get-together

MEXICO – The Class of 1959 of Stephens High School will have a get-together at noon Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Mexico Chicken Coop. Anyone in this class is invited to attend and renew old acquaintances. Phone Sue Gaudet at 364-4036 to make reservations.
