PORTLAND (AP) – The Maine Turnpike set a record last Friday for most traffic in a single day.

The Maine Turnpike Authority said 246,816 vehicles traveled the highway that day, breaking the old record of 231,750 vehicles on Aug. 16, 2002.

Turnpike officials attributed the heavy traffic to people traveling to last weekend’s Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland and the Phish music festival in Limestone.

The turnpike’s traffic count for Friday through Sunday was 613,765 vehicles.
