The first fund-raiser will be a yard sale and bake sale Sept. 1 in the town park.

KINGFIELD – The Kingfield United Methodist Church is undertaking a $35,000 project to replace the floors and supporting timbers in the church and fellowship hall.

The Administrative Council voted unanimously recently to proceed with the work after it was discovered that the major load-bearing timbers have disintegrated, putting the integrity of the church building at serious risk. Council members, led by Freeland Savage, board of trustees chairman, decided the project is essential if the church is to remain structurally stable for another century of service.

The project will involve replacing the floor in the fellowship hall and replacing the floor joists, carrying timbers and vertical timbers supporting the main church floor. Other work will include jacking and leveling of the church, installing foundation vents and subfloor insulation.

Floor covering and associated interior renovation is included, too.

The project should begin this winter.

To pay for it, church officials agreed to seek a loan which would be repaid through a fund-raising campaign. Pastor Norman Boulay said a church congregational meeting is required to authorize securing of a loan and one will be scheduled in the immediate future.

The first fund-raiser is a massive yard sale and bake sale Sept. 1 in the town park next to Webster Hall. More information will be forthcoming.

Lay leader Jack McKee said the fund-raising effort will probably consist of at least three target areas: grant solicitations, a series of church-sponsored events, and a major local capital fund-raising campaign. He said the local effort should be based on a combination of the historic value of the building as a physical structure and as a spiritual center for the greater Kingfield community for well over the past century.
