DIXFIELD – All adult and children flower enthusiasts in the River Valley (Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield areas) are being invited to display their flowers and plants in western Maine’s biggest flower show in 2003, opening Sunday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dixfield Historical Society, 63 Main St. No entry or admission fee will be charged.

The flower show is part of Dixfield’s bicentennial year celebration. Together with an outdoor market, art show and road races on the same day, it is expected to attract hundreds of enthusiastic participants and spectators from throughout Maine.

Plants and flowers may be entered in any of 10 categories: bouquet of wildflowers in a crock or pitcher; bouquet of cut garden flowers; houseplant; potted plant or container garden; flowers in a mug or teacup; for children 12 years and under – a bouquet in or with a toy or piece of sports equipment; a dried flower arrangement; a variety of vegetables – use vegetables in a basket or other container to create a display; miniature bouquet less than 4 inches high in a tiny vase; a single flower in a bottle or bud vase. Greenery and accessories may be used with all entries.

Participants should take plants and flowers for display to the Historical Society on Saturday, Aug. 16, between 2 and 5 p.m. Flower and plant exhibits must be picked up at the close of the show Sunday, Aug. 17, from 3 to 6 p.m.
