DIXFIELD – A ‘Ghost Walk” was given by Dixfield Historical Society members at the town’s bicentennial celebration in July.
The walk followed a church service and lawn picnic held at the old Holman Cemetery and field on land of the town’s original founding fathers and mothers. Settlers drifted down from among the gravestones and told the audience of their history and experiences during their lifetime.
Taking part in the program was Bill DeVries who played Dr. Elijah Dix for whom the town is named. Cheryl Elliott and Peter Holman played Mercy Knight Holman and Peter Holman who settled the homestead 200 years ago. Mrs. Elijah Dix, played by Judy Elliott Couture, gave an extensive history of the Dix family, and Pastor John Gensel of the Dixfield Congregational Church was the Rev. Ransom Gilkey.
Donna Towle played Mrs. Chestinia Edwards Marsh Gilkey, Patricia Jones portrayed Remember Ludden, an important figure in the town’s library, while Town Clerk Vickie Carrier portayed Melissa L. Brackett, the town’s first elected woman official. Paul Jones gave a renditon of Lt. John Stockbridge, one of the town’s first elected officials, and Charlotte Collins played “poor old” Bessey Dillingham who ended up on the town’s poor farm.
