JAY – The town manager was impressed with the results of this year’s summer recreation program. She was so optimistic, she plans to ask selectmen to consider a proposal to turn the program over to the School Department.
Town Manager Ruth Marden had high praise for Recreation Director Sue Weston, who is also transportation and grounds supervisor for the Jay School Department. She said Weston had run the program in a professional and organized manner. The town’s Financial Director Linda Brundage told Marden that she had never had such a “smooth” year with recreation. Bills had been turned in on time – all coded and signed and the payroll was easy to understand and accurate, Marden said.
“The parents are happy, I’m happy, the kids are happy and the Recreation Committee is happy,” she said. “It doesn’t get any better than that.”
Marden said she will discuss turning oversight of the five-week recreation program to the School Department at 6 p.m. Monday at the Community Building. The program is run out of the school buildings, transportation is provided by the school, the school provides the food and coordination of the program is at the school, Marden said.
If selectmen approved the proposal, Marden would bring the decision to school Superintendent Robert Wall who would bring it to the School Committee.
Marden said she would request that the Recreation Committee be kept because it is “a valuable resource.”
