In an effort to prevent the continued use of a vacant bus shelter in Depot Square as a hangout for teenagers, the Town Council voted Monday night to remove the structure.

It will be moved to the firing range used by the town’s police department.

There is no longer a public bus system serving Mechanic Falls, and town officials have received numerous complaints about youths hanging out in the shelter.

“It’s become a clubhouse in the middle of town. It doesn’t make sense to leave it there. It attracts problems,” Town Manager Dana Lee told the council before they voted 4-0 to move the structure.

Poland:

Wider pipe

will cost more

The Board of Selectmen agreed Tuesday night to allow the installation of a 3-inch diameter pipe, rather than a narrower 1-inch pipe, beneath Route 26 to carry water from the town garage to the municipal center, a distance of about a quarter of a mile.

Engineer Mark Gray explained that the larger water capacity of the wider pipe, which increases the budget by at least $8,500, is necessary.

The selectmen nixed a proposal for a second well. That issue may be revisited at a later date.
