POLAND – The Western Maine chapter of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine will hold its annual field day beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 16 at the Fred Huntress farm on Bailey Hill Road.

A walking tour will look at 33 years of forest management on two tracts of land, which have included pulpwood and saw-log sales, biomass operation and tree planting followed by hardwood control. Red pines planted in 1984 and 1985 are now 8 to 10 inches in diameter and have been pruned up to 13 feet.

The nature walk will look at old-growth pitch pines, hand-planted white pines, a black spruce peat bog, which once was mined, and two vernal pools with nest boxes for ducks. The trails are generally flat and easy walking.

Huntress, a western Maine forester and surveyor as well as longtime director of the association, may be reached at 998-4565 for further information.

Signs will direct field day visitors from Route 26 in Poland to the Aggregate Road by the Poland Town Garage and then to the site.

Coffee and doughnuts will be available at 8:30 a.m. The approximately three-hour session is free and open to the public.
