1923 – 2003

LEWISTON – Eugene W. Smith, 79, of Main Street, Lisbon Falls died after a very brief illness at Central Maine Medical Center, Tuesday, Aug. 12.

He was born in Lisbon Falls Sept. 24, 1923, the son of Charles B. and Vesta (Goodwin) Smith. He attended local schools and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1941.

He attended Gorham Normal School, but was soon called to serve his country in the United States Army from December 1944 to November of 1945. He married the former Erna Hildreth on Aug. 16, 1952 and they settled down to raise their family.

He operated the family dairy farm and was also employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk and supervisor for 32 years until his retirement in 1980. He was also secretary of the Hillside Cemetery Association since 1972.

In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and square dancing with the Sage Swingers with his wife and partner of 51 years.

He is survived by his wife, Erna (Hildreth) Smith; a son, Eugene Charles Smith and his wife Katherine of Lisbon Falls; a daughter, Eileen Smith-Porter and her husband Gregory of Bangor; grandchildren, Jason Moore in the United States Air Force stationed in England, Jennifer Moore of Lisbon Falls, and Erin and Katie Porter of Bangor; a sister, Lois Smith of Lisbon.

He was predeceased by his son, Errol in 1973.
