LEWISTON – City officials are looking for a little help designing changes to the Park Street Playground.

Plans for the park, at the end of Pierce Street and just off of Bartlett Street, could include new playground equipment and water fountain, according to Deputy Park Superintendent Megan Bates.

“There are all sorts of ideas we have for that park,” Bates said. “I think it’ll be interesting now to see what the public will come up with.”

Lewiston residents and park neighbors are being invited to a planning session at 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St. Consultants will show three design concepts for the park and then take suggestions.

The park currently has some old playground equipment and multi-purpose athletic field. Bates said plans currently call for updating the playground and putting in a new feature.

“Maybe we can create something the kids could play under, like a fountain,” Bates said. “That might not be included in the first phase of the renovations, but it’s something we’d look at in the long run. We’ve talked about ways to use it year-round. Right now, it’s only a one-season park. Maybe we could see a skating rink there. And we’ve talked about putting in a horseshoe pit. There are a lot of things we could consider.”

The city received a grant form the National Park Service to clean up and rehabilitate the park. The city hired Saco architects Richardson and Associates to draw up designs for the renovations.
