AUGUSTA – Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, reminds residents about two of the state’s property tax relief programs. The Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund Program, or “circuit breaker” program, refunds homeowners and renters up to $1,000 based on income levels and local property tax levels. The Homestead Exemption program allows all homeowners to eliminate the first $7,000 from the assessed value of their residence.

“Property tax relief is critical for the citizens of Lewiston,” Rotundo said, “and I hope that all homeowners are taking advantage of the homestead exemption. I also hope anyone who may be struggling with property taxes or high rent will fill out an application for the circuit breaker program to see if they qualify.”

Applications for the Homestead Exemption may be obtained by phoning the Lewiston City Hall at 784-2951 or by phoning Maine Revenue Services at 287-2013. Circuit breaker applications are available from the Lewiston Tax Assessor’s office at 784-2951, or by request from Maine Revenue Services at 626-8475.

More information on this program is available by phoning Maine Revenue Service’s State Income Tax Division at 626-8475, or the Lewiston Tax Assessor’s office at 784-2951. The deadline for applications is Dec. 31.
