In the ongoing saga of the mayor of Auburn’s citation, when will the second guessing come to an end? Most will develop an opinion as to whether Mayor Guay was, in fact, impaired at the time of the stop. Those same people will develop opinions about the Auburn Police Department’s judgment. Wait for the truth to emerge.

Instead, let us look at the violation instead of the political garbage that surrounds the case. Had the police not followed policy and allowed the operator to drive away, a liability issue would have developed. This would make the city liable for damages resulting in the operator’s actions if a crash had occurred after the stop.

The Auburn City Council should tend to normal business and not stick its nose in a personal legal issue. The officers acted reasonably and within the policies and procedures of the department. Leave it at that. Don’t waste time and money with a review committee for a violation of a resident. He is no different.

The operator is an adult that made decisions on his own. He chose to consume alcoholic beverages and chose to drive, as many of us do. No one forced him. Had the police just let the operator go because of political clout, who would be blamed then? There are no winners in this situation.

Let’s move on and find more important issues to deal with. Let the chips fall where they may and let the justice system work
