NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) – Henry Bonilla tossed seven strong innings and Joe Mauer drove in two runs as the New Britain Rock Cats defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 5-3 in the final game of a day-night doubleheader.

Kelly Shoppach hit two home runs and Jerome Gamble tossed six strong innings in his Double-A debut as the Portland Sea Dogs (65-59) topped the New Britain Rock Cats (61-63) 4-3 in the opening game. Greg Catalanotte drove in all three runs in the nightcap with three RBI singles.

Gamble, called up from Single-A Sarasota prior to the game, fired six innings of six-hit, three-run ball and retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.

Jake Chapman and Scott Aldred combined for three scoreless innings of relief as Portland pitchers retired 20 of the final 23 batters they faced.

Shoppach hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a solo home run in the fourth frame off Jon Pridie (4-9) to tie contest at three.

Justin Sherrod and Kevin Haverbusch followed with wall doubles to account for the eventual winning run.

With the split, Portland remains 4 1/2 games behind New Haven in the Eastern League North race.
