1922 – 2003

LEWISTON – Winfield Lewis Libby, 80, a long-time resident of Hinkley Street, died Friday evening at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He was born in Freeport, Oct. 8, 1922, the son of Leroy P. and Edith (Brett) Libby.

He was educated in the grammar schools of Freeport and was a 1941 graduate Freeport High School. On July 2, 1948, he married the former Gertrude L. Hodgkins in Lisbon Falls. She died Aug. 5, 1994. On Sept. 20, 1998, he married the former Effie Whitting in Lisbon Falls. She died in Feb. 2001.

He served his country as a member of the Signal Corps with the U.S. Army during WWII in the European theater of operations, having served at the Battle of the Bulge and in several other major battles and fronts. Starting in 1946 he became employed in the shoe industry in Lewiston, Auburn, and Freeport areas. For the last 20 years of his employment he served as a leather buyer and cutting room manager at Etonic Shoe Co. of Richmond, retiring in 1988. He attended both the Lisbon United Methodist Church and First Congregational Church of Durham.

He was a member since 1964 of the Ancient York Lodge #155 A.F. & A.M. Lisbon Falls where he served as master in 1974 and from 1980 and for several years served as secretary. He was also past District Deputy 1979 and 1980, Assistant Grand Lecturer 1982 and 1983, was a member of the Lewiston-Auburn Valley Scottish Rite Masons and Portland Consistory. His interest included a great love of golf and fishing and following the Boston Red Sox baseball team. He drew great enjoyment getting together with his family members and extended relatives and took a keen interest in their lives. He will be sadly missed by all of them.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Porter of Freeport, Ms. Margaret Uldall of Portland and Mrs. Luella Merryman of Lisbon Falls; four brothers, Richard Libby and his wife Fern of Lisbon Center, Clarence Libby and his wife Peggy of Durham, Stanley Libby and his wife Marion of Freeport and Norman Libby and his wife Rena of Tewksbury, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Frances Ringrose, and three brothers Leroy, Alfred and Donald Libby.
