AUBURN – Milt Simon, director, announces a change of date for the final concert of the Auburn Community Band 10-week summer season. The new date is Tuesday, Aug. 19. The free performance will take place at 7 p.m. at Festival Plaza on Main Street in downtown Auburn.
This marks a change from the band’s customary Wednesday evening performances. Simon said the band has decided to end this summer’s concert series on a Tuesday to accommodate those people who are, or have been, unable to attend any of the group’s midweek programs.
Since kicking off their program on June 18, the band has presented a different musical theme and selection of songs each week. Due to inclement weather, the band was unable to present its “Big Band” concert on July 16.
Many of the songs originally scheduled for that evening, plus several of the band’s newest selections, will be performed Tuesday.
This summer marked the 22nd season for Simon. The band has 48 musicians ranging in age from 12 to 78. The volunteer group, including Simon, represents a total of 14 central and southern Maine communities.
“This organization gives individuals a chance to utilize musical talents neglected since their high school days, and the entire community benefits,” said Simon, who was named Auburn’s “Volunteer of the Year” in 1999.
Weather permitting, the 75-minute concert will begin at 7 p.m. Free parking is available in the new parking garage located across the street from the plaza. Audience members are advised to bring their own lawn chairs.
The band is co-sponsored by the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department, the Dunlap Corp. and WCNN-AM 1240. For more information, call the Recreation Department at 784-0191, or visit the band’s Web site at www.auburncommunityband.org.
