SOUTH CHINA (AP) – An engaged couple was killed in a multi-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer on Route 3 Tuesday, police said.

Heidi Hannan, 18, of Palermo, was attempting to turn into her fiance’s driveway when the car was struck from behind by another vehicle.

The impact drove the Ford Escort into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, said Stephen McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Both Hannan and her 31-year-old fiance, Christopher Bray, who was a passenger, died at the scene, authorities said.

The vehicle that started the accident was driven by a Maryland man on vacation with his family, according to police. Kennebec County prosecutors have not yet decided whether to file charges against the man, McCausland said.

Also injured in the accident was Hollis Bagley, 60, of Stockton Springs, whose car hit Hannan’s following its impact with the tractor-trailer.

Bagley was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital, police said.

The tractor-trailer came to rest in a nearby used car lot, where it struck four cars, McCausland said.

State police plan to examine the car driven by Hannan, the tractor-trailer and the vehicle driven by the Maryland man.

The accident forced state troopers to close the busy highway between Augusta and Belfast and set up detours Tuesday afternoon.
