PRESQUE ISLE (AP) – A New Sharon man faces charges of aggravated assault and kidnapping after allegedly choking his ex-girlfriend with an extension cord, police said.

Melvin Taylor, 30, was arrested Monday by Franklin County authorities after police say he fled the scene of an assault on his 27-year-old former girlfriend.

The woman, who had been away for the weekend, returned to her Presque Isle house at approximately 6:30 a.m. Monday to let her dog out, said Sgt. Bill Campbell of the Presque Isle Police Department.

“When she opened the front door to call her dog, Taylor was standing inside,” Campbell said. “He pulled her inside, shut the door and threw her to the ground.”

Taylor then wrapped the extension cord around the woman’s neck and choked her, causing her to lose consciousness, Campbell said.

After the woman regained consciousness, Taylor took her outside, where she began screaming and escaped to a neighbor’s house, police said.

The woman was taken to Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle for treatment of minor injuries and was later released.

Taylor was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, violation of conditions of release and burglary.

He is being held at Franklin County Jail in Farmington is scheduled to appear Aug. 19 in Franklin District Court, police said.
