MINOT – State Police say a diabetic reaction is the likely cause of an accident on Route 119 that claimed the life of a pregnant woman Tuesday night.
The victim of the single vehicle rollover was identified as Naomi D. Smith, 27, of Minot. She was alone and was pronounced dead at the scene, Trooper Scott Gosselin said.
He said it happened about 11 p.m. about one-half mile after Smith turned off Minot Avenue.
“Witnesses traveling behind her said she was operating somewhat erratically. She lost control,” Gosselin said. “It sent the car spinning and onto its roof. The roof caved in on her.”
Smith was driving a blue 1997 Subaru Impreza station wagon.
Gosselin said Wednesday night that the investigation indicates a reaction to insulin might have caused the accident. He said Smith was diabetic and pregnant.
“She had been working at Clover Manor Nursing Home in Auburn. She had been having a real difficult time regulating her insulin because of the pregnancy,” Gosselin said, adding that her employer sent her home sick. He said she was scheduled to work until 7 a.m.
Gosselin said alcohol was not involved and speed is not believed to have been a factor. He also said he doesn’t believe Smith was wearing a seat belt.
It was Smith’s fiance, Rob White of Minot, who found the overturned car.
He “was leaving work and he came on the scene within minutes,” Gosselin added.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department and Minot Fire and Rescue.
