WESTBROOK – At the 10th Annual Diamond Awards, presented by the Credit Union National Association’s Marketing Council, the Maine credit union movement not only received a first-place award for community service but also took home top prize by being named ‘Best Of Show’ for its efforts.

Out of more than 1,000 entries, the Maine Credit Union League took top honors for its Maine Credit Unions’ Ending Hunger Walking Tour, an event that raised thousands for ending hunger as well as heightened awareness about hunger in Maine.

Professionals from credit union movements, public relations firms and advertising agencies around the country served as judges.

In recognizing the Maine Credit Union movement, the judges were impressed with “the scope, organization, uniqueness and success of this event.” One judge remarked, “This is an outstanding example of the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ in action. It is a tribute to the creativity and community spirit of Maine’s credit unions.”

The first Maine Credit Unions’ Ending Hunger Walking tour covered the entire month of November. It involved a hunger advocate walking throughout the state all month and stopping at each credit union to receive a donation. The tour covered more than 400 miles, raised more than $5,000 for hunger agencies and dramatically increased awareness about hunger in Maine. The second annual tour is planned this November.

The Maine Credit Union League is the State Trade Association for Maine’s 77-affiliated credit unions providing a variety of services and products to assist credit unions in meeting the needs of their membership.
