BETHEL – Town attorney Geoff Hole opened Monday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting following a one-hour executive session with a summary about pending litigation.

However, he didn’t reveal anything of importance about Oakes v. Town Of Bethel other than the town’s position.

The case involves a dispute over ownership of a road.

In summing up the town’s position, Hole said there will be a trial management conference prior to the actual trial on Tuesday, Sept. 9. During the executive session, Hole said he presented settlement ideas to selectmen, the plaintiffs and their attorneys, “which, if they had worked, would have prevented a trial.”

His next step was to contact Oakes’ attorney, discuss new ideas, and if possible, meet again with the board. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be reporting back to selectmen and abutting landowners until Friday, Aug. 29.
