Maine Congressman Michael Michaud has introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to repeal Trade Promotion Authority as he calls for fair trade agreements that will not cut jobs in Maine.
Rep. Michaud spoke and voted against the Chile and Singapore Free Trade Agreements during the recent debate in the House. He stated he did not oppose all free trade agreements, but wanted them to be fair to Maine and American workers.
In the Lewiston Sun Journal article of Aug. 15, Rep. Michaud, supporting legislation to withdraw from NAFTA, stated: “Maine is one of the states that has been hit hardest by NAFTA.”
When we look at Lewiston’s dead textile industry, we can’t help but wonder why the U.S. Congress callously allowed foreign competition to cut so many Maine jobs.
When we look at Auburn’s dead shoe industry, we can’t help but wonder what the U.S. Congress was thinking when it callously did nothing to support Maine jobs.
When we look at what is happening to the Maine pulp and paper industry, we can’t help but wonder how many jobs will be lost in the next 50 years.
We have Rep. Mike Michaud standing up for Maine’s working people in the U. S. Congress. We have a voice of reason from Maine in the Congress.
I hope Maine’s working people will support Rep. Michaud’s efforts so that their jobs will not be relocated to South America, Asia or Europe.
It’s time to stand up for our jobs.
