New England shows J.R. Redmond, Antwoine Womack, Ken Kocher and Buck Rasmussen the door.
FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) – The New England Patriots released four players Sunday, including veteran running back J.R. Redmond, who played a pivotal role in the team’s only Super Bowl victory.
The team also released running back Antwoine Womack and defensive linemen Ken Kocher and Buck Rasmussen.
The Patriots drafted Redmond in the third round of the 2000 draft out of Arizona State. In three seasons with the Patriots, the 5-foot-11, 215-pound running back rushed for 527 yards and scored one touchdown on 164 carries. He had 35 catches for 263 yards and two touchdowns.
In the Patriots 20-17 Super Bowl victory over the St. Louis Rams in 2002, Redmond caught three passes for 24 yards on the drive that ended in Adam Vinatieri’s game-winning field goal.
The Patriots drafted Womack in the seventh round of the 2002 draft out of Virginia. The 5-foot-11, 225-pound back was placed on the non-football injury list on Aug. 27, 2002, and missed his rookie season while rehabilitating an injury he suffered during his senior year at Virginia.
Kocher, a 6-foot-3, 316-pound nose tackle, originally signed with the Green Bay Packers out of UCLA as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He was signed to the Patriots practice squad on Oct. 28, 2002, and re-signed after the 2002 season.
Rasmussen, a 6-4, 281-pound defensive end, was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Nebraska-Omaha. He was credited with half a sack in the preseason opener against the New York Giants on Aug. 7.
