I write in regard to the proposed casino in Sanford.
I have vacationed in Maine since 1972. I discovered Sanford five years ago while avoiding southbound traffic on my way home. My wife and I seriously considered moving to Sanford and recently have spoken to local Realtors about property in Sanford.
Having read about the proposed Casino, I have given much thought to the pros and cons of the casino: pro – local jobs and property tax revenue in a gloomy economy; con – traffic, noise, crime, increased burden on the local and regional (county) infrastructure, gambling and drug (alcohol) addiction problems.
Let’s face it, casinos don’t provide the same output of goods and services that traditional businesses such as textile mills, logging, construction, hospitals or manufacturing provide, or used to provide. At a time when most consumers have less discretionary or disposable income, is more entertainment with the “promise” of riches at long adds necessary? Think about it.
