1914 – 2003

LEWISTON – Helen R. Dakin, 89, a resident of 33 Roger Ave., Lewiston died early Monday morning, Aug. 25, following a long illness.

She was born in Lewiston, March 7, 1914, the daughter of Anthony and Winnifred (Thompson) Rowe. She attended local schools, was a 1932 graduate of Lewiston High School, and a 1934 graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

It is in Rochester, NY, where she had resided for over 40 years before moving back to Maine in 1980. Mrs. Dakin was a former member of the Calvary Methodist Church in Lewiston, was active in Girl Scouting both in New York and Maine, was an enthusiastic member of the National Audubon Society.

She also had an avid interest in natural history, and was a member of the Natural History Group of Turner. She and her husband, Ralph traveled throughout the world following both solar and lunar eclipses.

Her interest in nature began a lifelong hobby of nature photography where she had presented many picture slide presentations of birds as well as other natural wonders of our planet to area school children. She was also a member of the New York Astronomy Club.

Survivors include two nephews, Anthony and his wife, Donna Rowe of Rumford, Sidney and his wife, Linda Rowe of Oregon; three nieces, Linda and her husband, Raynold Janelle of Farmingdale, Winnifred and her husband, Randy Hulbert of Utah, and Jennifer and her husband, Craig Marti of Boise, Idaho; one brother, Sydney and his wife, Elinor Rowe of Auburn.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph K. Dakin April 18,1995; and one brother, Arthur Rowe.
