The pool has been closed since July.

FARMINGTON – After a summer-long hiatus, the only public indoor pool in the county is back on line as of Monday.

The six-lane, 25-yard pool at the University of Maine at Farmington’s Health and Fitness Center had been closed since the first week of July for major repairs and renovations.

The project was scheduled over the summer months when the college was on summer break and warm weather meant community swimmers could utilize the area’s many lakes and ponds for their water workouts.

According to Jeremy Hatch, aquatics director at the college’s Health and Fitness Center, the renovations were a result of mold on the ceiling and high calcium and total dissolved solid levels in the water.

In addition, the pool had not been completely drained since it was built 10 years ago.

As part of the project, the ceiling tiles were replaced, as were water valves and pipes and the ventilation system. The surface of the pool was also acid-washed and the old water replaced, Hatch said.

On Monday, swimmers were already back getting their feet wet at the facility, despite a greenish tint to the water caused by high iron and copper levels in the town water that was used to refill the pool. Full clarity is expected by Tuesday evening or Wednesday, said an optimistic Hatch.

Swimmers are also being warned that the water temperature, which is currently hovering at 75 degrees, is cooler than usual but will be back to its normal 83 degrees by the end of the week.
