BOSTON (AP) – Vernon Wells hit an RBI double that keyed a five-run eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Boston 12-9 Tuesday night, ending a five-game winning streak for the Red Sox.

Down 12-7, the Red Sox rallied for one run in the eighth and loaded the bases with two outs. But Manny Ramirez struck out against rookie Aquilino Lopez.

Kevin Millar hit an inside-the-park homer in the ninth for Boston.

The Red Sox missed a chance to move up on New York, which lost to Chicago 13-2 but held its five-game lead in the AL East.

The Red Sox trailed 7-1, but rallied to tie it as David McCarty hit a three-run homer.

Toronto then pulled away and stopped its three-game losing streak.

Wells doubled down the left-field line with one out to score Mike Bordick for an 8-7 lead in the eighth.

The Blue Jays added four more runs in the inning on Josh Phelps’ two-run single and a two-run double from Eric Hinske.

Josh Towers (4-1) picked up the win in relief, giving up one run and three hits in 3 1-3 innings.

Scott Sauerbeck (0-1) took the loss, allowing two hits and one run while getting one out.

Frank Catalanotto hit his 10th homer in the third inning to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead.

Toronto began the fourth with back-to-back doubles by Phelps and Hinske to make it 4-1.

Orlando Hudson and Catalanotto added RBI doubles in the inning and Bordick had a run-scoring single.

Ramirez led off the fourth with a single and scored on a single by Doug Mirabelli.

McCarty followed with his first homer since July 2, 2002, when he was with Kansas City.

Boston cut the deficit to 7-6 on Bill Mueller’s RBI single and tied it at 7 when Todd Walker led off the seventh inning with a double and scored on Millar’s double.

Neither starting pitcher was able to make it out of the fourth inning against the AL’s two most potent offenses.

Boston’s Tim Wakefield allowed seven runs – five earned – and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings.

It wasn’t any better for Blue Jays starter Mark Hendrickson, who was removed with one out in the fourth after giving up six runs on eight hits.

Notes: Millar scored standing up after his drive in the ninth inning took an odd carom off the center-field wall. It was the second inside-the-park homer of his career, and the first for a Boston player at Fenway Park since Darren Lewis did it on July 28, 1998. …

Boston reliever Todd Jones left the game after facing one batter in the fourth inning.

He was hit by a one-hopper and is day-to-day with a bruised right forearm. Toronto OF Bobby Kielty wasn’t in the lineup after straining his left hamstring on Monday night.
