WATERFORD – State Police have finished examining a white Ford Escort and have impounded a second vehicle in their continuing investigation into last weekend’s fatal hit-and-run crash in Waterford.

A blue Ford Escort was seized Thursday night in Gray and was being examined at the State Police Crime Lab in Augusta Friday afternoon, Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said.

“We’re still working to determine whether either of these vehicles have been involved,” he said, in the death of Jesse Wildes, 16, of Bridgton. Wildes died of head and neck injuries after being struck by a car between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday on Mill Hill Road in South Waterford.

Crime lab technicians have completed their examination of a white Ford Escort impounded on Wednesday. An unidentified man in his 30s brought the car to the State Police barracks Wednesday “and told us he thought he was involved” in the accident, McCausland said.

Detectives took the man to the scene of the crash and are continuing to check out his information. McCausland would not say what the results were of the examination of the white Escort.

“The examination is complete, but the investigation is not complete,” he said.

The impoundment of the blue Ford Escort came about after “information came forward (Thursday) night that led us to this vehicle,” McCausland said. He declined to provide further details.

Police are still not identifying the man who came forward, or whether he is considered a suspect in the case.

“We’ve got to establish which car is involved. We’ve been very upfront with this,” McCausland said. “We just don’t think it’s appropriate to start naming names.”

Wildes’ body was found partially in the road by a Mill Hill Road resident about an hour after Wildes was seen alive lying in the road by other residents who stopped to help. The Lake Region High School junior had spent the evening with friends at Keoka Beach Campground and had reportedly left on foot after arguing with one of the friends. His body was found less than a mile from the campground.
