I keep hearing how Sanford would like to put a gambling casino in. I’m very much against it for many reasons.

First, how do we know they’d hire locals. Seems they need people who can deal a hand from elsewhere.

Second, in the late 1940s, there was some form of gambling here. My dad got mixed up in it and lost dearly. It got so my mother had to meet him at the Oxford Paper Co. on Thursday. In time, he did stop. Our family went without for awhile.

Third, who’ll take care of people who waste their money to gamble. Who’ll care for their families: The town? The state? The tribes? Who? Gambling can break up homes.

I know folks from this state go to Canada or Connecticut to gamble. The Indians have their Big Beano in Old Town. That should be enough.

They can go, at least Maine can remain without a casino. We do not need it.
