DURHAM – Renovations at Durham Elementary School have been completed just in time for the opening of school this week. Residents will have an opportunity for a preview at an open house 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“Much time and effort has been put into the $600,000 project to create a quality school environment that students, staff and citizens of Durham can be proud of,” said Superintendent Shannon Welsh.

Renovations began as soon as school closed in June and have been underway for most of the summer.

Renovations include new roofing on the sixth- eighth-grade wing, administrative office and the portable units; repairs or replacements of all unit ventilators and heating controls; asbestos abatement and installation of new carpeting or tile in the K-2 wing, administration area and boiler room; and updating/replacement of the outdated telephone system.

“We would like to thank the community of Durham for approving the $600,000 bond issue making these renovations possible,” Welsh said.

Some unplanned work was also done during he summer as a result of unexpected water damage that occurred during construction, Welsh said. Exterior walls, ceilings and floor finishes in the large portable unit had to be replaced at a cost of $110,000, however, she noted “Insurance adjusters have been working with us and we expect that almost all of this cost will be covered.”

“The School Committee also wishes to recognize the Parent Group for their many hours spent volunteering to help prepare the building for this work. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, Sept. 2, between 4 and 7 p.m. for a tour of your newly renovated Durham Elementary School.” Cookies and drinks will be served.
