Leavitt welcomes Lewiston into the KVAC with a 7-2 golf victory.

TURNER – The welcome to the Kennebec Valley Athletic Association wasn’t as warm as the Lewiston High School golf team had hoped Tuesday.

Playing in the first match of the season for both teams, Leavitt used four low scores from the bottom four golfers in their rotation to post a convincing 7-2 win over Lewiston at Turner Highlands Golf Course. Matt Chaisson, playing No. 5 for the Hornets, shot the low round of the day, a 2-over-par 38.

“I started off the day by hitting my drive under a tree,” said Chaisson. “After that, I punched out and made par, and it was a lot easier the rest of the way.”

In all, Chaisson had to hit just 14 putts on nine holes, allowing for a few mistakes elsewhere.

“I had a double bogey on the eighth and a bogey on the ninth,” said Chaisson. “It could have been better.”

Chaisson’s teammate, Sean Doyle, added to the low scoring with a 39, upending Lewiston’s Brandon Marcotte, who shot a 42. Things started well for the Blue Devils when Bryce Bryant came in with a 42, nine strokes ahead of fellow No. 1 Josh Jones. Jones took a 13 on the sixth hole which contributed to his high score.

“The course is tough when you haven’t played on it enough,” said Lewiston coach Don Jalbert. “I think we have a few kids on the team that aren’t happy with the way they played.”

Bryant and Marcotte’s scores tied for the team low, followed by Jake Girardin at No. 3 with a 43. Girardin took one point when he bested Josh White by two shots despite two consecutive triple bogies to finish the round.

“I chunked my flop shot on the eighth,” said Girardin. “I guess I was a bit scared to hit it too hard, and on the ninth, I thought I hit a pretty good shot and it took a horrible bounce over the green.”

Leavitt gets the new teams on its schedule out of the way in a hurry as the Hornets travel to Martindale to take on Edward Little on Thursday. Lewiston has a bye this week and resumes play next week at Skowhegan.
