1914 – 2003
AUBURN – Laura A. Whitman, 88, a resident of 440 Minot Ave., Auburn, died Monday, Sept. 1, at Clover Health Care.
Born in Boothbay Harbor, Oct. 3, 1914, the daughter of Charles and Ellen (Hodgdon) Chapman, she attended Boothbay schools and was a 1931 graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School.
She then went on to attend Central Maine General Hospital Nursing School in Lewiston, where she graduated in 1937. After graduating from nursing school she married W. Kenneth Whitman in 1940 and then lived in Auburn for the remainder of her life.
She worked as a nursing supervisor at Central Maine General, retiring at Central Maine Medical Center in 1980. Following retirement, she enjoyed traveling and belonged to many organizations. She was a life member of the Pine Cone Chapter 26 of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the High Street Congregational Church.
Survivors include one son, William and his wife, Barbara Whitman of Reading, Mass.; two grandchildren, Kristina Knauer of Tucson, Ariz., and Scott Whitman of Newington, Conn.; two great-grandchildren, Remington and Isabelle Knauer, both of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Whitman in 1955.
