BALTIMORE – Rodrigo Lopez pitched a seven-hitter as the Baltimore Orioles battered Tim Hudson and ended the Oakland Athletics’ 10-game winning streak with a 9-0 victory Wednesday night.
The A’s committed a season-high five errors, and Hudson (14-5) was pulled after allowing five runs and eight hits in three innings – his shortest stint of the year.
Hudson had won seven straight decisions and five starts in a row. It was the first time in 18 starts that he failed to pitch at least six innings.
The victory ended a nine-game skid for the Orioles, who entered 0-7 against Oakland and 0-7 lifetime against Hudson. Larry Bigbie hit a three-run homer for Baltimore, which scored just 10 runs in its previous seven against the A’s.
Lopez (7-9) was 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in two starts against Oakland this year, but on this night he allowed only one runner past second base. The right-hander struck out four and walked three in his first shutout and third complete game of the season.
The Orioles ended a 29-inning scoreless stretch by batting around during a three-run first inning. After Luis Matos singled off the glove of third baseman Eric Chavez, Bigbie singled to right. The ball was misplayed by Jose Guillen, who worsened the situation by throwing wildly to second, allowing Matos to score.
Jay Gibbons followed with an RBI double and B.J. Surhoff singled in a run. After Hudson hit Melvin Mora with a pitch, Miguel Tejada booted a grounder to short – the A’s third error in the inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Brook Fordyce hit a routine fly.
Chavez nearly tied it in the third. With two on and two outs, he hit a drive to right that was caught by Mora on the warning track.
Baltimore went up 5-0 in the bottom half. Deivi Cruz drove in a run with a groundout, and Fordyce scored on a throwing error by first baseman Scott Hatteberg.
All five runs against Hudson were earned – the most the right-hander has allowed in a game since May 30, when he yielded six earned runs in 3 2-3 innings at Kansas City.
Bigbie homered off Ned Sparks in the sixth, and Baltimore added a run in the seventh when Fordyce hit into a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded.
Notes: The start of the game was delayed 27 minutes by rain. … Oakland last committed five errors in a game on Aug. 8, 2000, against Detroit. … Mora has been hit by a pitch a team-high 10 times. … Oakland fell to 11-12 on Wednesdays, the only day of the week it has a losing record.
