WILTON – Police are investigating a burglary on Weld Road that was interrupted Tuesday afternoon when a girl arrived home from school. The teenager described the suspects as wearing ski masks.

The suspects ran out the back door of the mobile home and the girl locked herself in a bedroom and called police, Wilton police officer Ed Leahy said.

At least one suspect was reported carrying a bag, Wilton police officer Jeffrey Dunham said.

Dunham responded to the home, which is located about 4 miles from Main Street, along with five Franklin County sheriff’s deputies and tracking dog, Ben.

Officers searched for the two male suspects who fled up an embankment behind the home into the woods, Dunham said. Police chased the suspects through the woods and Ben tracked them, but officers couldn’t locate them, Leahy said.

But officers did recover some items in the woods that were allegedly stolen from the home, Dunham said. Other items from the residence are still missing, he added.

Police don’t believe forced entry was used to get into the home, Dunham said.

Dunham was called out of mandatory police training Tuesday night to return to the residence after noise was heard coming from behind it.

A subject who was located south of the residence later that evening was questioned but then released, Dunham said.

Police have at least two suspects in the case, Dunham said.

About the same time the burglary took place, a truck parked at that residence had a side window and windshield “smashed out,” Leahy said.

Both cases remain under investigation, Dunham said.

Anybody who has any information pertinent to the investigation can call the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department at 778-2680.
